About Me

I am an Assistant Professor of Theological Studies at George Fox University. My first book Gender and Pentecostal Revivalism: Making a Female Ministry in the Early Twentieth Century (Palgrave Macmillan in 2015) won the Pneuma 2016 Book of the Year award. My research interests include American religious history, gender and performance/ritual theory, New Testament hermeneutics, and theology and popular culture. I've published religion & pop culture pieces in The Washington Post and Christianity Today and right now I'm working on a book on charismatics & politics. In my spare time, I sip delicious coffee (what can I say? I'm an Oregonian!) and chat about religion & pop culture with friends (sometimes on this blog, sometimes elsewhere!).

Favorite Coffee Shops

Big Mountain Coffee Amazing little gourmet coffee shop in Depoe Bay, OR. Delicious, carefully crafted drinks.
Coffee Rush The best latte in the PDX area.
Edgehill Cafe The last time I was in Nashville, I had a delicious cup of java here. It's located close to Music Row and Vanderbilt University. Great location and ambience.
Great Espressions This one is in my hometown and is a sentimental favorite. They make mochas with chocolate milk. What's not to love?
Petit Provence They make a delicious cup of coffee and incredible breakfast. I like the Alberta St. location the best.
Moxie Java If you are ever in Idaho, you've got to check out this local chain that's expanding across the country. They make mochas the best way - with chocolate milk!

Favorite Television Shows (selected)

Battlestar Galactica (Re-imagined) BSG remains my favorite show ever. I cried when it was over.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel A classic.
Coffee Prince Korean Drama at its best.
Downton Abbey Anglophile's delight!
Firefly Is there anything Joss Whedon can't do?
Fringe One of the most underrated shows on T. V. You have to start from the beginning but once you do, you will be hooked!
Grimm Have to support a show made in PDX.
How I Met Your Mother Thomas and I started watching this show because a friend told us that we are Marshall and Lilly. We've kept watching it for its hilarious 90s flashbacks.
Parks and Recreation Best hero on television = Leslie Knope.
Smallville In a show with 10 seasons, some are bound to be better than others, but overall it was magical!
Supernatural So many things for a religion and gender scholar to analyze!
Veronica Mars It was a tragedy when this show was cancelled.
